Obviously you won't be out cycling much at the moment due to
the persistence of this white stuff we're experiencing, but when things clear up
you'll no doubt be chomping at the bit ready to get out on the roads! Remember
to keep your bike cleaned and maintained to prevent expensive damage or
equipment failure! See below for a few tips on winter bike training.
-
Road salt can and will corrode most of the metal parts of
your bike so ensure you clean your bike as soon as you finish every ride, muc
off, water and a brush and rag will do the trick, and using muck off it will
only take 5 minutes. You're already cold and wet so another 5 minutes won't
hurt.
-
There is lots of debris on the road at this time of year
which will tear through most race tires which are often expensive to replace,
it's always advisable to invest in a good pair of winter training tires which
are often quite inexpensive and reasonably bullet proof. Again they only take 5
minutes to change and have an added training bonus, they're often heavier,
thicker, and stick to the road like glue (so you can save yourself a few slips),
if you can train with them through the winter you'll feel like you're flying
when you put your race tires on in the summer!
-
Wear the right clothing! A hat / skull cap under your helmet
(ALWAYS wear a helmet!), gloves and over shoes are a must, and a base layer to
keep you warm would be smart too. You're also better off wearing something high
visibility, motorists need all the help they can get to see you!
-
Balance risk against benefit - The benefits of a 20 mile ride
in the snow and may not be much compared to 6 months out with a broken collar
bone when you skid down a hill! Take a phone with you and have emergency contact
details clearly visible, just in case...
-
Take bike lights, small ones are available to clip on to your
bike or helmet should things suddenly turn dark!
Finally, have your bike serviced! Have it serviced before
winter training, after winter has passed, before race season and after race
season. Four times a year, a small investment to ensure you and your bike remain
safe and in one piece, it also stops the expensive things going wrong with the
bike (and we know they can be expensive!).
