The Ferriby 10 mile road running race was the first
race of the season for me and the first competitive outing since mid October
The course is a loop, undulating but generally up
hill for the first 5 miles, mainly downhill thereafter until the end when a
nasty little climb brings you to the finish just opposite skidby
windmill
The race is the first big local meeting of the year
and the weather was bright and sunny although pretty cold with frost still
present on some parts of the course despite the 11am start
I entered the race (which was sold out) with no
great hopes still having stiff knees and a sore hip after my little coming
togther with tarmac at the walton street crossing last sunday
Plenty of familiar faces present including a
smattering of barracuda and lincsquad jerseys and the race set off at a brisk
pace into a mild headwind for the uphill section, thanks to karl and kat for the
cheers through little weighton
The race seemed to go quite quickly and i felt
pretty comfortable although a sore right knee was a constant reminder that i
dont bounce off roads anymore!
The pace was fast at first (1st mile was 6 mins but
think may have been a bit short) but settled into a pace i could hold but push
with at the same time, managed to stay with a couple of groups to share the work
and what i lost on the flat i seemed to gain going uphill so recent work on the
south ferriby hill paid off
towards the end of the race i lost a few places but
managed to peg most back again on the climb up to skidby mill and finished in 1
hour 4 mins 17 seconds for 42nd out of 491 which was pretty pleased with and 44
seconds quicker than last year which must be due to overall fitness as the
recent weather and more time spent on the bike and swim have seemed me reduce my
running over the last few months
So a good day was had and pleased to get the first
race of the year done, always a good atmosphere i would recommend to other team
members and know neil would have done it but for injury
Guess it also shows that you can continue to get
quicker as you get older if you keep at it!
thanks to the team as ever for the support, on to
the snake lane 10 mile at the end of feb and then clumber duathlon but do hope
its a bit warmer by then!
