The Yorkshireman - Update

The Yorkshireman

It's February and we're happy to announce that all systems are go for the first ever Yorkshireman Triathlon, powered by Aqua Sphere. It's taken over a year of multi agency planning and a few final tweaks but we're now ready to give the final release of the race plan for the day.

The Yorkshireman Triathlon is a standard distance triathlon in name only, "challenging" is one word that could be used so don't make the mistake of expecting a run of the mill triathlon with times that can be compared to other races. Yorkshire is a tough place, you would be disappointed with anything less than a tough race!

The Swim

The swim takes place in the mighty River Humber with it's strong and often shifting currents. You'll swim with the current so expect a fast ride, but it won't be easy! You should also give some thought to the name of the river... Humber, very similar to Umber, a natural brown clay pigment, the similarity isn't a coincidence. Visibility is very low in the river as it holds a high volume of suspended silt so we strongly recommend learning to swim with "crocodile eyes" and practice your sighting, but don't worry, you'll be escorted by safety kayaks and the inshore rescue boats of the Humber Rescue, so even though it's going to be a tough swim you're always going to be safe.

You will be escorted to the swim entry by the safety team, this will involve a short walk on the foreshore and as this is predominantly stone and pebble we strongly recommend you bring an old pair of flip flops which you can wear to the entry and you don't mind leaving behind.

Something Unexpected

On exiting the swim you'll need to get yourself to your bike in transition as you would in any triathlon, there is however one "minor" difference which you wouldn't usually expect, and that's a 500 meter run up the side of a hill to get to transition. The run is on a track but we have made sure there are plenty of steps to get the thighs and lungs burning before you reach the safety of your bike. We will be providing an extra transition point at the swim exit to allow you the opportunity to strip your wetsuit and put on a pair of running shoes, you'll need them unless you've got feet of leather.

The Bike and Run

The bike route is exactly the same as the original brief, a fast and undulating single loop course and the run is the same two lap out and back route across the Humber Bridge as used on the Humber Duathlon.

Charity Entry

There are several competitors taking on this race to raise money for the Humber Rescue service, we would like to wish these competitors the very best in their fund raising.

Prizes

Did we mention that the overall male and female event winners will each receive an Aqua Sphere Ironman Icon wetsuit? The best triathlon wetsuit money can buy! A number of spot prizes will also be awarded to competitors throughout the event.

And Finally... (for now)

Need kit and equipment for your race? Every competitor automatically receives a 10% discount on all purchases made through the 3xTri website, new 2010 stock due at the end of February!
